Resumen
Los cambios fisiológicos y conductuales en ungulados son una respuesta adaptativa frente a los cambios ambientales. El reloj biológico endógeno de cada individuo le permite al animal producir estos cambios en respuesta a fluctuaciones ambientales, siendo la luz el factor principal que module estos procesos, representada por variaciones en la concentración de melatonina. La presente revisión describe y contextualiza la traducción de la señal lumínica en variaciones en la concentración hormonal en ungulados. Describe el mecanismo como el fotoperiodo modifica procesos fisiológicos como la reproducción, aspectos físicos y conductuales, y la participación de los genes en el desarrollo del reloj biológico. El conocer la biología de los mecanismos que modulan los cambios fisiológicos y comportamentales en los ungulados facilita el manejo de los animales, en especial de aquellas especies donde el manejo es clave a nivel productivo y/o a nivel de conservación.
